I’ve never really heard of Ellery. Can you tell me a little about them?

Ellery is a husband/wife band comprised of Tasha and Justin Golden. Tasha does most of the writing; she sings and plays keys. Justin does most of the musical magic; he sings backup and plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar, a stomp board kick drum-ish thing, and many random instruments that will someday, someday, someday make their way to our live shows.

Ellery has been touring full-time since 2004, to all corners of the US. (Although the SW corner has admittedly seen little of us. We hope to come back soon!)

Our first record was a 5-song EP produced by the wonderful and now-dear-friend Ric Hordinski, released in 2005. That year, a Seattle label called Virt Records found us online and gave us a listen. They decided they wanted to release a full-length Ellery record, and sent us back to the studio with Ric. We added six more songs and released Lying Awake in April 2006.

We toured like CRAZY that year, and made some very fun connections with great artists, with Starbucks HearMusic, and with AAA radio around the country.
We also compiled live recordings from that tour, resulting in a live record called What I’ve Said Out Loud, which came out in 2007. Also in 2007, we connected with PBS and recorded An Evening with Ellery, which aired all over the country on PBS stations and on concert.tv, etc… and then released that summer as a live DVD.

In December 2007 we learned that Virt Records would be closing its doors. We loved these guys and had an enormously positive experience with them. But the changing industry took its toll, and Virt was unable to release any new records for its artists. The departure was sad but positive, with great things in the wings for Ellery and for Virt’s founder.
And alas we were indie again.

In '07 and '08 we continued to tour and were honored to be selected by Paste Magazine both years for its RockNReel at Sea Contest. (Paste selected twenty up-and-coming artists and then subjected them to an online vote… The winner got to perform on the Cayamo Cruise with artists like Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, and many more.)
While we didn’t win, we were oh-so-close both years, and in the process, we caught a glimpse of how amazing our fans are. We have warm, loving, dedicated, and sometimes shady-if-it-serves-Ellery’s-purposes fans.

Wow, are they lovely. We are lucky, lucky, lucky.

What style of music does Ellery make?

This is a fabulous question. Lots of people call it indie-pop. Or pop/folk. Or emo/acoustic. Singer/songwriter. We don’t know.
But we know it’s pop-ish. It’s emotional. It’s melodic and singalongable. People like to harmonize with it when it’s playing in their cars. People cry at our shows sometimes. Our songs seem to elicit personal stories from strangers after shows… and then we’re not strangers anymore. (We like this.)

Basically, we like singable music that makes us feel deeply, so that’s the kind of music that comes out of us when we write.

We’ve never had a “favorite artist” that we could point to as an over-arching musical influence. (That would make questions like this so much easier!)
But, we do listen to all kinds of music, the influence of which may or may not show up in our songs. Some of that music includes (in no particular order):

Ben Folds, Wilco, Patty Griffin, Andrew Bird, David Gray, Alanis Morrissette, Dolly Parton, Beck, Cake, Coldplay, James Taylor, Rufus Wainwright , Jump, Johann Johannsson, Over the Rhine, Radiohead, Josh Ritter, Willy Nelson, U2, Nickel Creek, Johnny Cash, Monk, Jim Croce, Fountains of Wayne, Teddy Thompson, Emmylou Harris, Snow Patrol, Daniel Lanois, Fiona Apple, David Bowie, Aberfeldy, Gillian Welch, Duran Duran, Feist, Chris Isaak, The Flaming Lips, Indigo Girls, Jason Harwell, Keane, Merle Haggard, The National, Death Cab for Cutie, REM, Teitur, Sixpence, The Postal Service, Rogue Wave, and many more…

We’d love to hear your opinion. Give us a listen and let us know what style you think it is.

    So… Why now?

We’ve had our eyes on a new record since late-2007. As a songwriter, you’re always most excited about the newest material. The new tunes are the ones that are especially wrenching your heart at any given moment.
So there are songs that have become standards in our live sets, but have never been recorded… There’s the tune that keeps popping up on our free Christmas EP… And there are new ones coming all the time. We desperately want to put them out into the world, in the way we’ve been hearing them in our heads.

Last Summer ('08), we recorded five songs so that we could share them with potential producers and move toward the next project. However, once the songs were recorded, it felt wrong to keep them to ourselves. So, in November 2008, we released those five songs on the EP You Did Everything Right.

Meanwhile, we continued to patiently comb through ideas for our next full-length. We didn’t want to make a record just to make a record. We wanted it to be great. We were basically waiting for the stars to align. Or something. We’d know it when we felt it.

In February 2009 we spoke with Malcolm Burn, and the rest of the story is unfolding…

This may be intrusive, but um -- what do you DO? What am I furthering?

Not intrusive at all. We know that our career is a weird one.
To oversimplify, we write songs, rehearse and continually tweak them, and we travel all over playing them at a crazy variety of venues, to a beautiful variety of audiences.

When we’re not doing that, our lives look a bit more normal. Our workdays at home (and on tour) consist of workaholic hours spent updating websites, making booking calls, and typing emails to Everyone-in-the-World: Venues, papers, radio, TV, bloggers, fans, friends, family, and fellow artists. We’ve been very DIY for as long as we’ve been at this, which has been a gift and a curse but mostly a gift.

Like anything, the artist/touring life has its pros and cons. But the unimaginably powerful pro is the sense of connection it creates. The point of anything we do with Ellery is to create personal songs and then share them. Because then, in that sharing, we can sense that vague feeling of being less alone, more human, a part of something. It keeps us going.

The goal of this record is to make something high-quality that ultimately moves our listeners; an album that makes that artist/listener connection more and more accessible more and more often.

    What is the goal amount?

Our goal is to raise $30,000.  It’s a little in the world of record-making, but it’s a lot in most other worlds -- So we’re deeply thankful for your generosity and involvement!   To find out why we settled on this amount, see the next question…

What are you going to do with the money you’re raising? Why this amount?

    So glad you asked.
Basically, our goal is to make the best record we possibly can.
We’ve been perching atop these songs for a long while, looking for someone whose unique set of skills matches the kind of music we make as well as our particular vision for these tunes and their stories. We’ve wanted to work with a producer who, as Justin has often said, “can make us better than we are.” Not a producer who could make us sound better than we truly sound, but one who could help us become better artists than we’ve ever been.

Now that we’ve found that person (Mr. Burn), the realities of record-making have set in.

We need money to pay the producer and outside musicians, as well as the mastering engineer and the kind folks who are letting us stay at their Kingston home for a song (pardon the pun) during our recording time this summer.
    But that’s just the recording/studio process…

Beyond that, there’s the getting-the-music-to-you -- which matters so deeply to us. As much as we adore iTunes, physical CDs remain important to us because we love the way their design and packaging help to tell an album’s story. The feedback we hear from our fans is that they love it too.
So the money we raise will help pay for the duplication process, for the graphic design and CD packaging, and for a new and improved website.

It will also help to fund the record’s promotion and publicity, which helps spread the word and makes touring possible. Touring can be costly, but through great promotion (especially with radio, press, and blogs), each trip we take can be maximized to reach the most fans and new listeners possible.
We SO want to make our way to your city for a live show (new records in-hand of course!), so getting the word out is essential!

Are you going to use my donation to buy a flashy wardrobe or a new TV?

    Short answer: No and no.
Your money will be used only for what is necessary for the completion and promotion of the new Ellery record.

Long answer: We’re a very bare-bones couple of artists. It has always been important to us to do everything with unquestionable professionalism, delivering the highest quality possible. However, we’ve also learned to stretch every dollar and to be creative about how we accomplish that quality and professionalism. We’ve been touring full-time for over five years, and we take nothing for granted because we absolutely can’t if we want to get by.
As another artist has said, “every penny is put to efficient use” – and the same will be true of this money we raise.

Thank you so much for investing in us.
